1.) The Novel Nothing But the Truth by Avi begins with Philip Malloy (the main character) In Mr. Lunser's classroom working on work from what Mr Lunser thinks is work from the day before but is actually what Phillip is studying for an exam. His homeroom was changed and Phillip was sent to Miss Narwin. While the playing of the National Anthem, Phillip is caught singing and after being asked to stop 3 different days, he is sent to the assistent principal and suspended.
2.) I think the Constitutional Principal that is being violated is Human Rights because it gives people the basic rights of freedom and one of those basic rights is freedom of speech. Phillip, too me, seems to be exercising this principal by humming during the playing of the National Anthem.
So far to me this book is page-turner, it makes me want to keep reading. It is set-up in a format kind of like a script without stage directions and scenes. Although it does seem to have something sort of like acts in it.

1.) I think the actions of Phillip seem to be drawing attention to the media because Philip's dad took him to see their neighbor Ted Griffin they are interviewed by a reporter that was interviewing Ted. The interviewer wrote a newspaper article written on what happened, how it happened, who was involved, and the reactions of what people had to say.
2.) If I was in Phillip's situation I wouldn't have done what he's doing any different. I think Phillip is handling the situation well enough. Although I wouldn't have done it any different, I think my thoughts would have been different because Phillip almost seems kind of calm about being suspended, but being me, I would have been a little worried about how my suspension would affect my record.
1.) I think Avi captured the essence of the constitutional issue human rights by having the the public sending letters about their opinion of what happened at Harrison School. Letters and telegrams where sent to Miss Narwin, the teacher who suspended Phillip for singing the National Anthem, and Phillip. Phillip's essence of Human Rights is shown by Phillip singing the National Anthem.
2.) I think the viewpoint of the author supported an individuals rights vs. the common good because it is Phillip's given rights to have freedom of speech. Phillip expressed his rights by singing the national anthem. It seemed like Avi was telling us, without actually telling us face-to-face, that Phillip did have these rights.

Hmm, and yet the teacher lost her job because Phillip was practicing his First Amendment rights not because he was patriotic but because he ultimately wanted out of her class so he could get an easy A and get back on the track team. Don't you find it deceiving and a bit sour that Philip never stepped forward and said, "My bad." Did she deserve to lose her job because she was following the school rules? I guess it goes to show you the power of the media.
ReplyDeletei agree i read this book and Miss narwin was just doing her job
DeleteThat does seem a bit weird because the teacher was just doing her job as Mrs. Wilson said. Do you think that it was right that they fired her just for doing her job? Or do you think maybe that the school did the right thing?
