My Opinion of the Book

First Things First...

Well... this was the best book ever! (although it doesn't beat Hunger Games, it comes second!) I would reccomend it to a lot of people. This is a moving book towatds the end, it shows that change is possible, even in the worst of cases. If you plan on reading this book have tissues, it might make you cry.

This was probably the most mysterious poem in the book because first, Ruby started to fall asleep when she heard her phone ring. When she picked up the phone she heard her mothers voice on the other line. Even though she knew she was talking to a dead person she continued her conversation like her mom was alive. Throughout the conversation Ruby starts to wonder why her mother asks how her dad has been doing because, she hates him, but before she can answer her mom shouts, "get out of the house Ruby, get out of the house!" Then she wakes up.

Did you have any idea what was going on when your mom was talking to you?

Ruby: Nope! I just remember talking to her when it happened, like nothing was wrong. Although I was puzzeled on why I was talking to a dead person.

Overall

The overall style and form of this poem seemed to be short but powerful. To me it seemed powerful because as I read on I got to a poem were after that dream Ruby got out of her bed (and her house) walked up to a tree that a boy in her school, Lakewood, had hit. Her dad could hear her get out of bed and so he followed her. In the next poem she turns around to see her dad. Sobbing, she runs over to her dad and hugs him. After a few minutes an earthquake starts. To her, it seemed like five minutes, but it only lasted four seconds. When Ruby gets home she realizes that a large wooden bookshelf had fallen on her bed. If she hadn't gone to the tree, that bookshelf would have crushed and killed her.

In this poem Ruby is trying to cross the street (jaywalking) when she hears the siren of a policeman who's tan is extremely deep, wearing dark sunglasses, and has dangerously white teeth drives up. She realizes she's he's after. Once he drives up to her, he pulls out a pad, writes some words on it, and then sticks it to her hand. She realizes she just got a ticket.

Questions for the Ruby

Did you know you weren't supposed jaywalk?

Ruby: No, because in my old town I did it a lot, no one told me it was illegal.

Do you regret what you did?

Ruby: Yes, because now sooner or later I have to tell my dad... I slammed the door in his face (a few poems after this one) and made him cry, so... I regret jaywalking, it'll make him even more angry and sad.

What This Means to Me

What this means to me is that you should follow the law, try to figure out if a law is different from what you usually do.

Overall

What I saw overall reading was that the techniqe of this poem was short sentences and single words. I didn't understand the poem until I read it a second time. I think that the meaning of the poem was to tell how different Ruby's old town was from Hollywood. There's more police and monitoring in Hollywood.

While I was reading there was one poem that really caught my eye. Dream interpretation was about Ruby visiting the one class she got to sign up to be in. During a dream interpretation Ruby whatches a video clip of a famous dream interpreter. While he is helping his patient discover why he was having these dreams, he was also putting the person in the place of the main piece of the dream. For example: if you're having a dream of a dog running in a park getting tired of chasing a ball, it probaly means you're tired of what your doing and probably need to try some thing new. So, you need to put yourself in place of the dog. Ruby learns in this poem that you need to think deep inside yourself, thinking about why your having these dreams. So far Ruby has had no dreams she has tried to interpret using her newly learned lesson, but I think the dream interpretation will have a affect sooner or later in the book.

"It Figures"

The Poem I Liked Best, So Far

The poem I liked best was "It Figures." I thought it was funny and also very frusturating for Ruy because, the pilot had announced a breathtaking view of The Grand Canyon on  the left side of the plane... guess what side Ruby's on? You probably guessed correct, the right side.

My Book

                                                          Why I Chose This Book

I chose this poem because the title really stood out. I liked the way it sounded and how it looked.

Short Summary           

            One of Those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies is about a fifteen year old girl named Ruby. Ruby's dad is a megafamous actor named Whip Logan. Ruby has always wanted to meet her dad when she was now she hates his guts. Did I mention that Ruby's mom died and she has to travel away from here friend and her boyfriend Ray. Once Ruby gets off the plane she sees her dad by a pool of fans. He, in no way, sees her when she steps off the plane. Once her dad spots her she doesn't know where to run, scream, or kick him, so she doesn't do either. Her dad walks over to her and says "you must be Ruby" she doesn't say a thing. Her dad drives her to his mansion the size of a museum, and leads her inside to find the room of her dreams.

If I had a chance to meet Whip Logan (Ruby's megafamous dad) what made you choose fame over family? I want to know the answer to this question because it greatly impacted the way Ruby grew up. Growing up with no dad can be hard.
